Andromeda Re-Imagined: A Sanctuary in Deep Playa 2019

"Andromeda Reimagined" was a multi media, collaborative installation piece originally exhibited at Burning Man, in Black Rock City Nevada in 2019. In keeping with the event's theme that year, Metamorphosis, "Andromeda Reimagined" seeks to reinterpret the original myth of Andromeda to be a tale of personal growth and empowerment.

The four paintings depict a retelling of the Myth of Andromeda; here the titular Andromeda grapples with internal strife, confronts her demons, and is aided toward renewal by her loved ones. The final painting depicts Andromeda's transformation into stars.

The project was helmed by architect John Marx, who designed the pavilion itself to be a reflection of the harmony between masculinity and femininity, the strength of the geometric pattern, and the sensuality of the curve. Stepping inside, one is illuminated by the dapples created by the lace-like walls, alluding to Andromeda's final transformation into a constellation. Mischell Riley's sculpture "Freedom and Awaken”depicts Andromeda at one with the ocean, surrounded by a community of sea creatures, burdened by neither chain nor monster.
